The crowds at the 2016 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival are in for a racing treat, with the announcement of champion jockey Tommy Berry to ride in the highly anticipated 60th running of the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup on Monday 1st August at Fannie Bay.
Berry, 25 has fast become the name at the forefront of thoroughbred racing with his recent stunning victory aboard the ‘Thunder from Down Under’ Chautauqua in Hong Kong. Chautauqua is the first Australian horse to win an International Group One Race at Sha Tin, stealing the racing headlines worldwide as he stormed home to claim the Chairman’s Sprint prize.
Berry has been a dominant force in the Thoroughbred world over the past few years, winning multiple Group One races on both Australian and overseas soil, with momentous highlights such as his 2015 Golden Slipper win aboard Vancouver, giving Gai Waterhouse her sixth Golden Slipper title.
Berry’s trip to Darwin is an exciting addition to the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival highlights and he will be a special guest speaker at the 2016 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival Luncheon on Thursday 28th July, taking to the stage alongside celebrated trainer Peter Moody and “Buffering’s” trainer Rob Heathcote.
“The Darwin Turf Club is overjoyed with the news that superstar jockey Tommy Berry will be making the trip to Darwin for our 60th running of the iconic event”, said Darwin Turf Club Chairman Brett Dixon.
“The Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival continues to attract the big names in racing with its Territory charm and calibre of racing on offer”, he said.
