Choggy’s My Mate, trained by Kym Healy, was a tough winner of a rough-house Darwin Racing Maiden Plate (1300m) on Wednesday.

After Dee Fearless missed the jump and Austintayshus, who was in a real mood pre-race, refused to hit out and tailed off, Dakota Gillett parted company with her mount Let’s Soldier On, who appeared to blunder with about 450m to run. Thankfully, Gillett was able to walk back to the jockeys’ room, but was complaining of a sore elbow and was taken to Royal Darwin Hosputal for observation.

While all this was going on, Choggy’s My Mate sat up on speed outside New York Spirit, took over early in the home straight and then hung on to repel Go Barney Go by a short head in a thrilling finish.

Hollerbyebaby, after looking a distinct threat at the 100m, was three-quarters of a length back third.
