BAT PAD, with the first cricket Test between Australia and the West Indies in progress in Perth, was the omen bet at Fannie Bay on Saturday and duly obliged in the feature LJ Hooker Handicap.

Trained by Mark Nyhan and with regular rider Sonja Wiseman in the saddle, Bat Pad trailed the pacemaker Niewand from the outset of the 1100m and was in a stalking position on the home turn.

However, Niewand found a kick and it took Bat Pad almost the length of the straight to get the better of her rival, who was just collared for second close to home by Mr Cashman. The winning margin was a cosy length, with a half-length between her closest pursuers…
