Double to master of the Bay

Paul Denton turned back the clock at Fannie Bay on Saturday, the celebrated horseman snaring a double courtesy of Siakam and Magnolia Rose with copybook rides in the last two events on the card.
Denton, a Darwin Racing Hall of Farmer and the Territory’s oldest active jockey at 59 years young, gave his younger rivals a lesson in how to ride the Darwin track, a course on which he has ridden hundreds of winners during his career.
Aboard Siakam in the TAB Handicap, Denton settled his mount beautifully behind the pacemaker MR Cashman, challenged early in the home straight and had the race in sage keeping soon after, scoring by two lengths from stablemate Great Diviner, with Smuggling running into third just under two lengths away.
Denton has a good affinity with Siakam the pair having won the St Patrick’s Cup in mid-March and they have combined to date for three wins. The Gary Clarke-trained five-years-old is racing in great heart at present, and seems set for a good Darwin Cup Carnival…
