Noel ‘King’ Callow, who had gone winless in his previous handful of visits to the Top End, exorcised those demons with a copybook ride on Bear Story in the $60,000 Asian United Food Services Chief Minister’s Cup.

It was the feature event on day two of the 2024 Great Northern Darwin Cup Carnival at Fannie Bay on Saturday.

The champion hoop, based these days on the Gold Coast, answered an SOS from trainer Neil Dyer to partner his team during the carnival, and Callow, who has ridden in many countries with great success in the southern hemisphere, showed class in no uncertain terms on Saturday. After beginning well and settling perfectly in fifth as Wolfburn and Starspangled Baby cut out the pace, Bear Story crept closer down the side and just before the home turn, Callow eased his mount out around the leaders and was ready to pounce.
