It was a red-letter day for long time local trainer Tayarn Halter at Fannie Bay when she sent out a race-to-race double courtesy of Forms of Fear and Canton Kid.
And not to be outdone, Tommy Logan and wife Sonja bagged their own consecutive race double in the last two races of the card.
Forms Of Fear showed his rivals a clean pair of heels on Friday when bolting away with the Become A DTC Member Handicap, before Canton Kid, in a carbon copy, did exactly the same in the TAB Handicap.
Forms Of Fear, a six-year-old son of Written Tycoon, was having his first start for just over five months and the questiopn was whether he would be fit enough for the 1200m first up. But connections and supporters need not have worried as Raymond Vigar sent his mount straight to the front and he set up a strong gallop.
He had his rivals off the bit approaching the home turn and dashed clear on straightening, reaching the line clear by 2 1/2 lengths from Crown Waters, who chased hard, with Vanguard Legend a solid third ahead of Prince Ruban and the eye-catching Capitol Hill.
Forms Of Fear raced in some good company last preparation and though he didn’t win, he ran some good races.
He has always had plenty of speed, but his latest effort in running 1:07.65, was what his trainer wanted to see.
“Nothing went right last campaign and back to an 0-70 today, I thought he could win if I had him fit enough,” Halter said. “Raymond rode him a treat and we’ll have a chat to the owners now about the way forward,” added Halter, who did not rule out a tilt at the $100,000 Pioneer Sprint (1200m) in Alice Springs in early May. Forms Of Fear is raced by a group of long-time Halter stable supporters, and a number were-on-course to share in the win, the horse’s fifth from 24 starts. He has stakes now of nearly $122,000.
Some of the Forms Of Fear owners, including Dean Gerbert and Wes Roach, also share in the ownership of Canton Kid, who like his stablemate, was not for catching in the 1100m of the TAB Handicap in his first race since August 2.
Vigar employed the identical tactics aboard the eight-year-old chestnut, who like Forms Of Fear, is by Written Tycoon.
Hi pinged the gates, set up a margin over his four rivals as the home turn neared and hit the line more than five lengths clear of La Boqueria, with the same margin back to Kessler.
Canton Kid, who still holds the Fannie Bay 1200m track record at 1:07.09, is now the winner of nine races from 44 starts, and with the eight seconds and four thirds, took his take earnings to $187,524.
Debating, who had gone winless since mid-November last year, bounced back to his best form with an all-the-way win in the Ladbrokes Fast Payouts Handicap (1300m).
Trained by Ella Clarke and with leading rider Jarrod Todd in the saddle, Debating went straight to the front and defied his rivals to run him down.
Beatification and Hell Fire Miss, who were second and third in the run, tried hard in the straight but had to be content with a dead heat for second, a short neck behind the winner. Debating, a five-year-old son of Reward For Effort, has now scored on four occasions from 24 starts, and with 11 minor pplacings as welkl, has stakes now of almost $112,000.
Jumping Power Two, after giving his supporters some worrying moments at the gates, came out on top to record his third straight win in the Top End and the Silks Darwin New Menu Handicap (1000m).
Just as starter Jack O’Neill was about to let the field go, Jumping Power Two reared, depositing rider Sonja Logan on the ground behind the stalls.
However, she escaped injury and was cleared to climb back aboard her mount.
He began well and sat on the outer of Starspangledancer and the pair went together as they turned into the straight.
After a brief tussle, Jumping Power Two got the better of his rival and went on to record a length and three-quarter victory over Dancer For Money, with a short head backl to Field Of Praise.
Trained by Logan’s husband Tommy, Jumping Power Two, as well as the $13,650 first prize, also earned his owners a Sportsbet Newcomers Bonus of $5,000 for winning his third race in the NT in the calendar year – in fact, he achieved the feat in six weeks!
The Logans doubled up when Juelene broke through for her first win at the 28th time of asking in the ROANT TROBIS Maiden Plate (1000m).
After beginning well, Juelene sat on the outside of Tea Galleria before assuming control with 600m to run. Logan sent her mount for home on the point of the turn and she kept up a strong gallop to score by two lengths from a game Tee Galleria, with Rede Extreme finishing off into third a long neck back.
